Ahmedabad: Marking Rheumatology Awareness Month, the Vasculitis Society of India, in association with the Rheumatology Association of Gujarat (RAG), on Saturday launched a Vasculitis Patient Support Group in the city to strengthen awareness and patient support for rare autoimmune disorders.

The initiative aims to provide patients and caregivers with access to reliable information, guidance, and community support, helping improve disease management and quality of life. Originally started in Punjab, the Vasculitis Society is now expanding its footprint across the country through such outreach programmes.

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, in a message, congratulated the Indian Rheumatology Association (IRA), RAG, and the Vasculitis Society for the initiative, noting the importance of awareness campaigns in strengthening public healthcare efforts.

Doctors said vasculitis, which causes inflammation of blood vessels, remains underdiagnosed due to its varied symptoms and resemblance to common conditions such as infections and tuberculosis. The disease can affect multiple organs, including the skin, kidneys, lungs, and brain, often leading to delayed diagnosis and complications.

Experts also pointed to challenges such as limited access to advanced diagnostic tests and the high cost of treatment, including biologics and immunosuppressants. Despite its rarity, vasculitis collectively affects a significant number of patients, often resulting in long-term health and economic burdens.

Dr Aman Sharma, president of the IRA, said increasing awareness and improving access to specialised care are critical for better disease outcomes. Dr Sapan Pandya and Dr Reena Sharma highlighted the role of patient education and community support in ensuring timely diagnosis and management.

As part of the awareness month, a CME for postgraduate medical students will be held on April 19 at NHL Medical College, while a Rheumatology Awareness Walkathon is scheduled at the Sabarmati Riverfront on April 26.
