New Delhi : The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed a ₹810.79 crore contract with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) for the procurement of 160 Satellite Smart Anti Airfield Weapons (SAT-SAAW) along with associated equipment for the Indian Air Force (IAF).
The contract was signed on September 23, 2026, in New Delhi in the presence of Defence Secretary Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh. The procurement has been undertaken under the Buy (Indian – Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured) category, providing a significant boost to India’s indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities.
SAT-SAAW is an air-to-ground precision-guided glide bomb designed and developed indigenously by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The weapon can be launched from platforms including the Jaguar, Hawk and Su-30 MKI and is designed to engage enemy airfield targets from a long stand-off range.
The system will have an indigenous content of 60%, with further indigenisation of key subsystems including the Initial Measurement Unit (IMU), Long Impact Delay Fuse and Twin Store Carrier. These measures are aimed at strengthening domestic defence technology and manufacturing capabilities under the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. Deliveries of the SAT-SAAW systems are scheduled during 2027-28 and 2028-29. The induction of these weapons is expected to enhance the operational capabilities of the Indian Air Force and contribute to strengthening India’s overall defence preparedness.
