Goa: As artificial intelligence, automation, and rapid technological advancements continue to transform industries worldwide, higher education institutions must rethink how they prepare students for the future, said academic leaders at the World Peace University (WPU) Goa Open House held on June 20.
The event brought together prospective students, parents, and educators to discuss the future of learning, employability, and the evolving role of universities in an increasingly dynamic and unpredictable world. A key focus of the discussion was WPU Goa’s transdisciplinary model of education, designed to equip students with both specialized knowledge and the ability to connect ideas across multiple domains.
Addressing the gathering, Vice Chancellor Professor Walter Leal highlighted the university’s vision of creating future-ready graduates through immersive learning, industry integration, global exposure, and active learning experiences.
“WPU Goa is being established around a transdisciplinary approach that encourages faculty and students to engage with perspectives beyond the boundaries of a single discipline. Through immersive learning, industry integration, global exposure, and active learning, the university aims to prepare graduates for a lifetime of learning, adaptation, and leadership,” he said.
Speaking on the changing nature of careers, Dr. Ashish Bharadwaj, Pro Vice Chancellor of WPU Goa, noted that universities can no longer focus solely on preparing students for their first job. “The more important question is whether we are preparing students for the multiple changes, transitions, and opportunities they will encounter throughout their lives. The future belongs not simply to specialists, but to individuals who can learn continuously, connect ideas across domains, and respond to challenges that do not fit neatly into traditional categories,” he said.
The discussion examined how long-standing assumptions about higher education are being challenged as industries evolve faster than traditional academic cycles. Participants explored how emerging professions, changing job roles, and the growing influence of AI are creating demand for individuals who can combine expertise from different fields and adapt quickly to new environments.
Speakers also emphasized the increasing importance of curiosity, resilience, critical thinking, and lifelong learning as key capabilities for future success. They stressed that universities must prepare students not only for existing careers but also for opportunities that have yet to emerge.
WPU Goa currently offers undergraduate programs including B.Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Bachelor of Management Studies (Hons.), B.Des. in Integrated Product Design, B.Des. in Communication Design, and B.Sc. (Hons.) in Psychology.
At a time when students and parents are seeking clarity about the future of work, the Open House reinforced the need for educational institutions to focus on long-term adaptability and continuous learning, ensuring graduates are equipped to thrive in a rapidly changing global landscape.
